U1, L1-Core Concepts

Lesson 1

TermDefinition
Longitude These vertical lines run east to west and measure north to south
Latitude These horizontal lines runs north to south and measure east to west
Equator This horizontal line is located at 0 degrees latitude and it splits the Earth in half (top and bottom)
Prime Meridian This vertical line is located at 0 degrees longitude and it splits the Earth in half (right and left)
Hemisphere The name of each half of the Earth
Map Key Provides information on the map symbols
Map Scale Provides information on distance
Political Maps Shows political units such as states and capitals (ex: U.S. map)
Physical Maps Shows physical or natural features (ex: mountain elevation)
Special-Purpose Maps Shows location or distribution of human or physical features (ex: voting results)
