The Land and Native Peoples of North America

| oral history | spoken records, including stories, that have been passed from on generation to the next |
| potlatch | a special feast given by Native Americans of the Northwest Coast, in which guests receive gifts |
| prairie | flat or gently rolling land covered mostly with grasses and wildflowers |
| slash-and-burn | a method of clearing land for farming by cutting and burning trees |
| totem pole | a tall carved log used by Native Americans of the Northwest Coast to honor and important person or to mark a special event |
