| relative location | a location in terms of its distance and direction |
| absolute location | references a location on earth's surface based on specific geographic coordinates such as latitude and longitude |
| lines of longitude | imaginary lines, called meridians, that run from the north pole to the south pole measured as east and west. |
| prime meridian | an imaginary line of longitude at 0 degrees that divides that divides the eastern and western hemisphere. |
| lines of latitude | imaginary lines called parallels that are measured of north and south of the equator. |
| equator | An imaginary line at 0 degrees. The equator divides the world into the northern and southern hemisphere |
| compass | A navigational tool that helps you find north , south, east and west points in a map , tool etc. |
| compass rose | A navigational tool that is used for finding specific points such as northwest northeast or southwest and southeast. |
| scale | A map scale that refers to the distance of a tiny space on a map. |
| legend/key | A visual explanation of the symbols of the map. The legend/key will reflect the type of map being used. |
| cartographer | A person who draws or produces a map. |
