Abolitionist | Someone who wanted to eliminate or abolish slavery |
Abraham Lincoln | 16th President of the United States; leader of the Union during the Civil War |
Border States | Slave states that did not secede from the Union; these states include Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, and West Virginia |
Confederacy | Another name for the Confederate State of America, which was the American South; This group of states left the United States to form their own country. |
Dred Scott Decision | This decision made by the Supreme Court that stated that The Supreme Court could not ban slavery |
Emancipation Proclamation | Issued by President Abraham Lincoln declaring that all persons held as slaves in Confederate states shall be set free |
Jefferson Davis | President of the Confederate States of America |
Ulysses S. Grant | 18th President of the United States; Commanding General of the Union army |
Robert E. Lee | Commanding General of the Confederate Army |
Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson | A general officer in the Confederate Army |
Frederick Douglas | A famous American writer and abolitionist who became a national leader of the abolitionist movement |
The Union | Another name for the northern United States; also called the North |
Reconstruction | The rebuilding of the southern states after the war so that they could rejoin the Union after the Civil War |
The Civil War | A war that lasted from 1861-1865 between the United States and the 11 southern states that seceded from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America |
Dred Scott | A former slave who fought for his freedom in the Supreme Court |
The Battle at Gettysburg | A major turning point battle in the Civil War |
Harriet Tubman | Led 300 slaves to freedom on the Underground Railroad |
Battle at Fort Sumter, SC | April 12-14, 1861; marked the start of the Civil War |
Battle at Bull Run | July 1, 1861; The first major land battle of the Civil War |
Battle at Antietam | September 16-18, 1862; deadliest battle in the Civil War |
13th Amendment | a modification to the Constitution that made slavery illegal in the United States |
