| Barbed wire | Twisted metal wires with sharp barbs; used by homesteaders to protect their land. |
| Erosion | The gradual destruction or reduction of something |
| Great Plains | A region of flat, dry grasslands between the Appalachian and the Rocky mountains |
| Settler/Homesteader | A person who settles in a new place and establishes a home or farm |
| Windmill | Used by homesteaders to pump water from the ground. |
| Exoduster | African Americans who migrated from Southern States because of economic, political, and social grievances to Great Plains states like Kansas after the Reconstruction period. |
| Wheat | A hardy crop that grew well in the dry climate of the Great Plains. |
| Cattle | These animals were raised across the Great Plains for food and driven north to cities like Chicago to be processed. |
| Vaqueros | Men of Hispanic descent who herded livestock across the Great Plains. |
| Dry farming | A farming method used in dry regions. This made it possible to grow crops with very little rain. |
| Steel Plow | Made of heavy steel, this technological advancement allowed homesteaders to prepare the soil for planting. |
| Homestead Act | Granted 160 acres of government land to any settler who would farm it for at least five years |
| Sodbusters | Homesteaders who lived in homes made out of sod, or earth. |
| Mechanized Reaper | An invention that mechanized farming so that crops no longer had to be harvested by hand |
