Stamp Act 1765 Taxed paper products such as newspapers, legal documents, pamphlets, playing cards, etc.
How did the colonists respond to the Stamp Act? They held marches and rallies against the act. They also boycotted British goods, resulting in England to repeal the act.
Why were the colonists upset with England? Taxation without representation, violation of individual rights, and removal of self-government.

How many branches of government do we have? 3: Legislative, Executive, and Judicial
What is the purpose of checks and balances? For one "branch" of government to check another. Making sure no "branch" abuses their powers or tries to take total control.
Social Contract People and government make an agreement.
What did the colonists want from England? They wanted direct participation in Parliament, among other things.
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” People are born with certain rights that cannot be taken away from them.
That to secure [protect] these rights, Governments are instituted [created] among Men, deriving [taking] their just powers from the consent of the governed" The government's role is to protect the people's rights.
That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government . . .” If the government does not protect people's rights, the people can remove or change the government.
“The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States.” The King, who is equal to a tyrant, repeatedly said no and denied the colonists rights/a say in Parliament.

What are the Grievances in the Declaration of Independence? A list of all the things the King and Parliament did wrong to the colonists.
