Environmental Concerns of Canada

What is Acid Rain? This is rain polluted by gasses released into the air by burning fossil fuels.
What are the largest contributors to acid rain? The largest contributors are pollutants from coal burning factories and power plants and vehicle emissions.
What region of Canada experiences the highest levels of acid rain and why? The southern region experiences the most because of its factories and proximity to the US border.
What are some effects of acid rain? Some effects are polluted farmland, dead fish, and damage to buildings.
What are some solutions to the effects of acid rain? They're building factories that don't pollute the air, requiring cars to produce less pollution, and encouraging people to walk ride bikes, or take busses to work.
Why is the Canadian Shield so important to Canada's economy? It is rich in minerals like gold, copper, zinc, lead, iron ore, uranium, and nickel.
Why is the extraction of natural resources harmful to Canada's environment? It destroys animals' habitats, seeps into ground and water sources, and creates acid rain.
How is Canada addressing the harm to the environment? They've made new rules about mining and monitoring that process very carefully.
What are the three major timber-producing provinces in Canada? The highest ones are British Columbia, Quebec, and Ontario.
What is clear cutting and why is it harmful to the environment? Clear cutting is when a company removes all of the trees from a given area. It is harmful to the environment because it makes it hard for new growth to start, reduces animal habitats, and lead to flooding.
What is the solution to clear cutting? Millions of seedlings are being replanted every year, and the government has set aside protected land in parks and reserves.
