The article speaks of a term called “Imperialism”. Any idea what it might mean? The process of creating an empire.
What does the article say the word “Empire” means? Territories ruled over by a single authority.
Is the land in the empire close to the original country or can it spread out across the world? It can spread out across the world.
Britain itself was once part of the a very famous empire for nearly 400 years. What was that Empire and how far did it stretch? Roman Empire. It stretched from Britain to Egypt.
What is the term used by the article to define the people who inhabited land before the empire arrived? Indigenous People
What are some of the things that an empire brings into an area that they are taking over? Laws, language, culture, etc.
The imperial process is meant to benefit whom the most: the home country of the empire or the indigenous population? The home country.
What term is used by the article to explain the process of exploiting the resources of an area to help out the home country? Colonialism
List the places where the British Empire set up colonies? All over the world.
When was the British Empire at its largest size? 1922
How much of the Earth’s land was under its control? A quarter (23%)
How many people did it directly rule over? 458 million
What technological advance in the 16th made it possible for European nations to explore more of the world? Shipbuilding technology improved
What’s a really simple way to explain the term “colony”? Communities set up by the empire in a foreign land.
What three valuable materials were gathered by these colonies to be sent back to England to turn into finished products? Metals, sugar and tobacco.
How could colonies be good for both the rich and poor of Britain? Rich people could make money by investing in colonies, and poor people could find work in colonies.
When was the first attempt at a colony in North America made and where was it? Roanoke Island, North Carolina in 1585.
What was the name of the first colony that succeeded in America? Jamestown, Virginia in 1607
Where was the name of the first colony in New England (not in the article, but I hope you know it- think “Pilgrims”)? Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts in 1620
In order to keep taking more and more land into its empire, what did England have to do with some of the other competing European countries? Fight with other European countries.
The British established many colonies in the “West Indies” which go by what other name today? The Caribbean
Due to climate, what luxury products were grown and harvested in these colonies? Sugar and Tobacco
What do we call the large, money-making settlements that grew those crops? Plantations
What is a fact that we should not forget about these settlements? Often used slaves
What was the British East India Company? A company from Britain that traded with and ruled parts of India and Asia.
