Prehistory Vocabulary

| Hominids | The family of mankind and their relatives. |
| Pangaea | A supercontinent that incorporated all the landmasses of the Earth. |
| Migration | Movement from one location to another, in order to establish a new permanent settlement. |
| Nomads | People without a permanent home, either individually or as a community, who wander from place to place. |
| Surplus | Having more than what is needed. |
| Prehistory | The time period before written records. |
| Agriculture | The cultivating of land and the raising of crops for the purposes of farming. |
| Paleolithic | Old Stone Age, which occurred circa 2.6 million years-10,000 years ago. |
| Domesticate | To tame an animal or plant to life to the advantage of human beings. |
| Fossils | The remains of living things. |
| Artifacts | The remains of things that were made. |
| Homosapiens | "Wiseman" and the group including modern-day humans, which is believed to be the first hominids to develop language. |
| Hunter-Gatherers | A group of people who lived by hunting, fishing, or foraging in the wild. |
| Neolithic | New Stone Age, which occurred c. 10,000 years ago + is associated with the shift from hunting and gathering to agriculture. |
| Homo Sapien | “Wise man” and the group including modern-day humans, which is believed to be the first hominid to develop language. |
| Stone Ages | A period in history when man learned to make tools out of stone. |
| Technology | The application of science and engineering to create tools that improve quality of life. |
| Lascaux | A cave in southwestern France that contains Paleolithic paintings. |
| Archaeology | The study and discovery of both artifacts and human remains of ancient people through exploration and excavation. |
| Beringia | A narrow passage of water located between Russia and Alaska, where it is believed that humans crossed a frozen land bridge from Asia to North America during the Ice Ages. |
| Ancestor | Relatives or family members who lived in the past. |
| Ice Age | Time periods with consistently freezing temperatures throughout the world. |
| Homo Erectus | “Upright man” and believed to be the first hominid to walk on two feet full time, learn to control fire, and migrate outside of Africa. |
| Homo Habilis | “Handy man” and believed to be one of the first hominids to create stone tools. |
| Neanderthals | The closest extinct hominid to humans who lived across Europe and central Asia, and believed to be the first hominid to bury their dead. |
