Nation State The form of political society that combines centralized government with ethnic and cultural unity
Matrilinear The form of society in which the family line, power wealth are passed down through the female side
Confederacy An alliance or league of nations or peoples looser than a federation
Middlemen In trading systems, those dealers who operate between the original buyers and the retail merchants who sell to consumers
Ecosystem A naturally evolved network of relations among organisms in a stable environment
Demographic Concerning the general characteristics of a given population, including such factors as number, age, gender, birth, and death rates
Capitalism An economic system characterized by private property. Generally free trade and open and accessible markets
Encomienda The spanish labor system in which people were held to unpaid service under the permanent control of their masters, thought not legally owned by them
Mestizo a person of mixed native american and european ancestry
Nationalism Belief and loyalty given to the political unity of the nation-state
Primogeniture the legal principle that the oldest son inherits all family property and land
Joint stock company an economic arrangement by which a number of investors pool their capital for investment
Indentured Servant a poor person is obligated to a fixed term of unpaid labor, often in exchange for a benefit such as transportation, protection, or training
Matriarch society ruled or controlled by women
Melting pot ethnically diverse population that is presumed to be "melting" toward some eventual commonality
Predestination it is already decided by god that you are either going to heaven or hell no matter what you do
elect Calvinist Doctrine, those who have been chosen by god for salvation
conversion a religious turn to god, intense personal experience where you know that you are going to heaven
Visible Saints those who publicly proclaimed their experience of conversion and were expected to lead godly lives
Seditious inciting or causing people to rebel against the authority
Autocratic marked by a strict authoritarian rule, without consent of participation of the population
Blue Laws designed to restrict personal behavior in accord with a strict cod of morality (Puritan / Quaker)
Headright system 100 acres of land to those who paid passage
Disenfranchise to take away the right to vote
Middle Passage Middle segment of the forced journey that slaves made from Africa to America throughout the 1600s
MenialMenial work not requiring much skill or lacking prestige
Hierarchy social group arranged in ranks or classes
Corporation Business owned by multiple people
Lynching the illegal execution of an accused person
Blue Blood of noble or upper-class descent
Sect a small religious group that has broken away from mainstream church, claiming superior possession of religious truth
Stratification the visible arrangement of society into a hierarchical pattern, with distinct social groups layered one on top of the other
Almshouse originally designed to give shelter and work to the poor
Gentry high social class
Tenant Farmer the landowners would rent out pieces of their land to tenant farmer
apprentice a person who works under a master to acquire instruction in trade or profession
Speculation Buying land or anything else in the hope of profiting by an expected rise in price
Revival in religion, a movement of renewed enthusiasm and commitment, often accompanied by special meetings or evangelical activity
Secular Belonging to the worldly sphere rather than to the specifically sacred or churchly
