| Allied Powers | The victorious alliance of nations in WWI and WWII WWI- France, Great Britiain, USA, Russia WWII- France, Great Britiain, USA, U.S.S.R. |
| armistice | a formal end to war, cease fire |
| Central powers | The defeated alliance of nations in WWI Germany, Ottoman Empire, Austria- Hungary |
| Communism | a sociopolitical model where property is publicly owned and workers are paid according to their abilities and needs. |
| depression | in economics, a long-term, sustained turndown of the economic activity. Many people struggle during this time. |
| fascism | a political movement supporting strong, authoritarian government dictatorship |
| Vladimir Lenin | leader of the communist revolution in Russia during World War I |
| Nazism | a political movement in GERMANY, for the end of WWI through the end of WWII. There was totalitarian government, extreme nationalism, and racial supremacy. |
| United Soviet Socialist Republic ( U.S.S.R.) | the federation of communist countries in Eastern Europe, led by Russia, from the time of the Russian Revolution to it collapse in 1991 at the end of the Cold War |
| Treaty of Versailles | a treaty in 1919 which formally ended WWI. It stated- 1. Germany lost land and territories 2. Germany had to decrease their military 3. Germany had to take blame for WWI 4. Germany had to pay reparations |
| Reparations | payment for war damages |
| World War I | known as the Great War , the War to End All Wars. It was a global conflict from 1914-1918 , primarily in Europe |
| anti-semitism | racial bias or prejudice against Jewish people |
| Adolf Hitler | Chancellor of Germany and leader of the Nazi regime during WWI |
| Holocaust | the Nazi internment , forced labor, and killing of nearly 11 million people during WWI, 6 million were Jewish people |
| propaganda | information, usually misleading or biased, designed to promote a particular political way of thinking. |
| World War II | a global conflict occurring between 1939 to 1945, Allied Powers won |
| Cold War | 1947-1991- a state of hostility between the USSR and USA, no physical fighting occurred but showed force through the Arms Race and Space Race |
| Arms Race | a competitive show of force between USA and USSR over who has the most power weapons |
| Space Race | a competition between USA and USSR over space exploration |
| Hyperinflation | In the 1930's, Germany printed so much extra money to pay off the war reparations that the money lost value and became worthless. |
| Glasnost | means openess- Mikhail Gorbachev wanted to be more open and transparent with citizens. Allowed for more free speech in the media. |
| Perestroikia | means restructure- Mikhail Gorbachev wanted to restructure the economy to allow for some business to be owned by the people. |
| Superpowers | refers to USA and USSR during the COLD WAR. They were big influencers of government and the economy at the time. |
| Collapse of the USSR | due to the economic down turn, citizens were protesting, were tired of not having enough, and wanted freedoms. |
| Germany Reunification | Germany reunites after being 2 separate countries during the COLD WAR. No longer democratic West and communist East Germany. Now we have just 1 Germany. |
