| 13th Amendment | Abolished slavery |
| 14th Amendment | Granted citizenship to all people born in the U.S. |
| 15th Amendment | All men, regardless of race, have the right to vote |
| carpetbagger | Northerner who moved to the South during Reconstruction in order to make money or gain political power; this term was used as an insult. |
| black codes | Southern laws designed to restrict the rights of newly freed black slaves |
| Scalawag | A white southerner who supported northern reconstruction policies; this term was used as an insult. |
| Ku Klux Klan | A secret society and terrorist group created by white southerners to use terror and violence agains African Americans. |
| 10% plan | Part of Lincoln's Reconstruction Plan. Confederate states could establish new state governments after 10% of their male population took a loyalty oath |
| Freedmen's Bureau | Organization created to help formerly enslaved African Americans with food, shelter, clothing and medical services |
| Jim Crow laws | State and local laws that legalized racial segregation. |
| Emancipation | The freeing of enslaved people |
| Abraham Lincoln | 16th President of the U.S.; he was President during the Civil War. He supported the Emancipation Proclamation; he was assassinated in 1865. |
| Andrew Johnson | 17th President of the U.S.; assumed the role of President after the assassination of Lincoln. Johnson had been a former slave owner in Tennessee. |
| poll tax | a tax required to register to vote |
| reconstruction | The period after the Civil War (1865 - 1876) when the U.S. needed to rebuild the nation bringing the north and south together. |
| freedman | A person freed from slavery. |
| literacy test | required voters to read and write in order to vote |
| segregation | The separation or isolation of a race, class or group. |
| abolish | put an end to something |
| Frederick Douglass | An escaped slave from Maryland who became a famous speaker, abolitionist, writer and statesman. |
| Robert E. Lee | Confederate general during the Civil War; after the war, he made efforts to help reunite the country. |
| Ulysses S. Grant | Union general during the Civil War; 18th President (1869 - 1877) |
| American Civil War | A civil war in the U.S. between the Union (the "North") and the Confederacy (the "South). |
| Lynching | Violent acts that white people used to terrorize and control black people, especially in the South. Some white people were lynched for helping black people. |
| Jefferson Davis | President of the Confederate States of America (1861 - 1865) |
