Brain Drain Large scale emigration by talented people
Chain migration The migration of people to a specific location because relatives or members of the same nationality previously migrated there
Circulation Short term, repetitive, or cyclical movements that recur on a regular basis
Counterurbanization Net migration from urban to rural areas
Emigration Migration *from* a location
Floodplain The area subject to flooding during a specific number of years
Forced migration The migrant has been compelled to move by cultural factors
Guest workers Citizens of poor countries who obtain jobs in Western Europe and the Middle East
Immigration Migration *to* a new location
Internal migration Permanent movement within the same country
International migration Permanent movement from one country to another
Intervening obstacle An environmental or cultural feature that hinders migration
Interregional migration Movement from one region of a country to another
Intraregional migration Movement within one region
Migration A permanent move to a new location
Migration transition Changes in a society comparable to those in the demographic transition
Mobility Types of movement from one place to another
Net Migration The difference between the number of immigrants and the number of emigrants
Pull factor Induces all people to move *into* a new location
Push factor Induces all people to move *out* of their present location
Quotas Maximum limits on the number of people who could immigrate to the US from each country during a 1-year period
Refugees People who were forced to move out of their country
Undocumented immigrants People who enter country without proper documents
Voluntary migration The migrant has *chosen* to move for economic improvement
