Dynasty | A line of kings or rulers who belong to the same family |
Nilometer | A device used to measure the Nile’s river |
Shadoof | A device made from a long pole with a bucket on one end and a weight on the other used to dip water out of the Nile River |
Hieroglyphics | A system of writing made of picture symbols |
Sarcophagus | A stone coffin |
Rosetta Stone | An ancient rock stele or monument carved with Egyptian hieroglyphics, Greek, and another script; used as a key to decipher Egyptian hieroglyphics; discovered in the Egyptian town of Rosetta in 1799 |
Papyrus | Paper made from the stem of the papyrus plant |
Pharaoh | A ruler of Egypt |
Delta | A fan-shaped area of fertile land at the mouth of a river |
Canopic Jar | A special of container for organs of a dead body |
Great Pyramid | The largest of the three pyramids in the valley of Giza; built for the Pharaoh Khufu |
Jean-Francois Champollion | Egyptologist who translated the hieroglyphics on the Rosetta stone in 1822 |
Social Pyramid | A triangle-shape diagram |
Hyksos | a people who invaded Egypt at the beginning of the New Kingdom; their technology included bronze and iron weapons and horse-draw chariots |
Amulet | A large ornament worn on a necklace and thought to protect the wearer from evil spirits. |
Tutankhamun | Pharaoh of Egypt at the age of nine; died around age eighteen or nineteen; sometimes referred to as King Tut; know for his tomb of treasures |
Hatshepsut | Queen of Egypt; ruled during the New Kingdom |
Howard Carter | Archaeologist who discovered and cataloged Tutankhamun’s tomb |
Thutmose III | Became the ruling pharaoh of Egypt after Queen Hatshepsut’s death |
Rameses II | One of the last pharaohs of Egypt; also called Rameses the Great |
Akhenaten | Pharaoh during the New Kingdom; tried to change the Egyptians' beliefs about many gods and believed there was only one god, Aten |
Kush | An ancient land along the Nile stretching from just south of Egypt to Khartoum in present- day Sudan |
Meroitic | A script language developed by the people of Kush |
Aswan High Dam | The manmade dam across the Nile River that formed Lake Nasser |
Lake Nasser | The manmade Lake formed by the Aswan High Dam |
