QuestionAnswer
• Fundamental: Something that is very basic and used during more complex tasks
• Constitution: The supreme law of the land in the United States that establishes the structures for the U.S. government and protects minority rights
• Principle: A general law or assumption
• Consent: To give approval or acceptance to something done by someone else
• Representative Government: A governmental system in which people elect office holders (ex: senators, mayors, presidents) to make laws and speak on their (meaning the people's) behalf.
• Limited Government: The government is not all-powerful and may only do things the people of America have given it (meaning government) the power to do.
• Unalienable Rights: Rights that cannot be taken away (Ex: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness)
• Democracy: A system of government in which the people rule through the government of elected officials
• Declaration: The act of making something officially known
• Ratify: To formally approve and accept a law or a group of laws
• Natural Law: The belief that there exists a universal set of moral principles that can be applied to any culture or system of justice
• Rule of Law: The principle that government is based on clear and fairly enforced laws and that no one is above the law
• Individual Rights: Rights and liberties that can be claimed by individuals by virtue of being human; also known as natural rights or human rights
• Social Contract Theory: The idea that legitimacy of a government stems from an unwritten contract between the ruler and the ruled; a ruler who breaks this contract by abusing people's rights loses legitimacy and may be overthrown
• Popular Sovereignty: The principle that the people are the ultimate source of the authority and legitimacy of a government
