Grade 8 - Social Studies

TermDefinition
Citizen A person in a society who has rights and responsibilities.
Democracy The people of the society control the government (ex. Athens, Greece).
Republic A government with representatives chosen by the people (ex. Rome, Italy).
Law Written rules
Bill A proposed new law.
Tax Money given by citizens to the government.
Constitution The written laws for how a government functions.
Bill of Rights The activities that the U.S. government protects for its citizens.
Amendment Add-ons to the constitution.
National 1 government in Washington D.C.
State 50 governments (ex. Boston)
Local (Municipal) City Hall
Legislative Congress (House and Senate) Role: Law Making
Executive President of the U.S. Role: Law Enforcement (make sure the laws are followed)
Judicial U.S. Supreme Court Role: Judge the Laws
