| Term | Definition |

| Physical Map | Shows the natural landscape features of the earth |
| Political Map | Shows the governmental boundaries of countries, states, and counties. They can also indicate the location of major cities. |
| Compass Rose | A map element which indicates the primary directions on a map or chart. |
| Cardinal Directions | The directions of North, South, East, and West |
| Intermediate Directions | The directions that are halfway between the cardinal directions. Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, and Southwest |
| Latitude | The east-west lines in the grid system which measure distances north and south of the Equator |
| Equator | The line at 0 latitude. This is halfway between the north and south poles. |
| Longitude | The north-south lines in the grid system which measure the distances east and west of the prime meridian |
| Prime Meridian | Imaginary line that is located a 0 degrees longitude and is the starting point for measuring distance both east and west around the Earth |
| Hemisphere | Half of the earth/globe. The Equator divides the globe into the North and South Hemisphere through the Equator. The Prime Meridian divides the globe into the East and West Hemisphere through the poles. |
| Continent | any of the large landmasses of the earth |
