Map Skills Stack

6th Grade Map Skills

TermDefinition
Physical Map Shows the natural landscape features of the earth
Political Map Shows the governmental boundaries of countries, states, and counties. They can also indicate the location of major cities.
Compass Rose A map element which indicates the primary directions on a map or chart.
Cardinal Directions The directions of North, South, East, and West
Intermediate Directions The directions that are halfway between the cardinal directions. Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, and Southwest
Latitude The east-west lines in the grid system which measure distances north and south of the Equator
Equator The line at 0 latitude. This is halfway between the north and south poles.
Longitude The north-south lines in the grid system which measure the distances east and west of the prime meridian
Prime Meridian Imaginary line that is located a 0 degrees longitude and is the starting point for measuring distance both east and west around the Earth
Hemisphere Half of the earth/globe. The Equator divides the globe into the North and South Hemisphere through the Equator. The Prime Meridian divides the globe into the East and West Hemisphere through the poles.
