Physical Geography Study of the patterns and process related to the Earth's surface
Landforms Specific physical feature of the Earth's surface
Biomes Large ecosystems characterized by common climate, vegetation, and animal life
Lithosphere The solid surface of Erath, including the soil and landforms
Hydrosphere The water areas of Earth, including oceans, lakes, rivers, ground water, glaciers, and water vapor
Biosphere The areas of the Earth that support planet and animal life
Atmosphere The gaseous area of air surrounding the Earth
Tectonic Forces Physical process involving the movement of the Earth's crust
Erosion The wearing away of the Earth's surface caused by the movement of water, ice, or wind
Climate A pattern of the combination of precipitation and temperature over time
Location A specific point on the Earth's surface
Place An area distinguished by unique physical and human characteristics
Region A spatial division of the Earth's surface that shares a common characteristic
Perceptual Region Area of the Earth's surface that is defined by a perception of the people living there or by the general society and may not be based on objective data
Formal Region Area of the Earth's surface that is unified by a measurable physical of human characteristics
Functional Region Area of the Earth's surface that is defined by an interaction or connectivity
Free Enterprise Economic system in which private individuals own businesses to make profits and economic decisions are made by producers in response to consumer demands
Socialist Economic System Economic system in which some large-scale business enterprises are government-owned and operated for the benefit of society
Communist Economic System Economic system in which the means of production are owned by the government for governmental control of the resources
Primary Economic Activities Economic activities focused on extraction of natural resources
Secondary Economic Activities Economic activities focused on the manufacturing of goods and services
Tertiary Economic Activities Economic activities focused on the delivery of services
Quaternary Economic Activities Economic Activities focused on management, information processing, or research
Culture A way of life of a group of people who share traditions, interests, beliefs, and ways of making a living
Civilization A culture that has organized a social, economic, and political system and has achieved a certain level of development in the arts and sciences
History The written information about a people's past
Pre-History The time in people's past before written records - Geographers learn about prehistory by studying artifacts
Artifacts Objects that were made or used by people (weapons, tools, pottery etc.)
Cultural Hearths Places where civilization began (Mesopotamia, Egypt, Indus River Valley, China, and Meso America)
Cultural Diffusion The spread of people, ideas, practices, and goods from culture to another
Language Family A group of languages having similar beginnings (Latin - Spanish, French, and English languages)
Religion An organized way of worshipping a spiritual being or thinking about life
Democracy People vote for their leaders
Oligarchy Ruled by a few (Olive Garden)
Republic Ruled by Representatives. Example, US has too many people to directly vote on laws. We vote for representatives that we believe have same beliefs as us. In return, when the representatives vote, we hope they vote for laws that we would vote for
Communist Government owns everything and all decisions are made for the masses
Authoritarian/Dicatorship One leader has full power over a country
Constitutional Monarchy Mixed form of government between a king/queen and a representative body (like Parliament in Britain)
