Multimedia Systems
Terminology in MMS
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Multimedia system | It uses at least three media types, such as text, images, animation, audio and video. |
| Hypertext | It is a system that allows documents to be cross-linked in such a way that the user can move from one document to another by clicking on a link. |
| Bit-mapped graphics or Raster graphics | Treat each pixel on the screen individually and represent this by bits in memory. |
| Vector graphics | Are made up of objects, such as a straight line, a curve, or a shape. |
| Interactivity | Allows the user to choose the sequence and content of information. |
| Print media | Provides a limited form of linear interactivity. |
| Bit depth | Is the number of bits per pixel that is stored. |
| Analogue data | Is represented by continuous variable quantities such as sound waves or radio waves. |
| Digital data | Is represented in the form of digits or numbers(01100100) and can be processed by a computer. |
| Sample rate | The number of times a sample (slice) is taken from the sound wave. |
| Sampling | The method used by the ADC to digitise a sound wave is called: |
| Sample size | Is the number of bits stored per sample. |
| Stereo sound | Uses two channels (left and right). |
| Frame rate | The speed of a video or animation. |
| Cel-based animation | Involves drawing and displaying individual frames or cells. |
| Path-based animation | Involves displaying the movement of objects onto a fixed background in a particular sequence or path. |
| Morphing | An animation technique that involves for the smooth change between two different images. |
| Warping | An animation technique that involves transforming or distorting a portion of the image. |
| Virtual Reality | The use of computer modelling and simulation to enable a person to interact with an artificial environment. |
| Information kiosks | Allow people to use a touch screen and select information about an organisation or service. |
| Flight simulators | Are used to train pilots. The external effects, such as changing weather conditions, require high-resolution images and the ability to control different aspects of the system. |
| Head-up displays | Are devices worn on the head to display information. |
| Presentation software | Is used to make a professional presentation to a group of people. |
| HTML editor | Is a software program that specialises in writing HTML code. |
| Authoring software | The software allows the user to bring together the separate media types- no need for extensive HTNL knowledge. |
| A storyboard | Is a series of frames each representing a different action or screen image. |
| A linear storyboard layout | A simple sequential path that is set up quickly such as PowerPoint and Books. |
| A hierarchical storyboard layout | A sequential path in a top-down design in which the user starts at the beginning and moves down through the multimedia product. |
| A non-linear story board layout | No structure; the user moves between different layouts in any direction |
| Compression | Reduces the number of bits required to represent information. It allows the user to store more data and makes data transfer faster. |
| Lossy compression | Removes a number of data bytes from the file. The resulting file is smaller in size but the quality is reduced. |
| Lossless compression | Allows the original file to be recovered in full. It works by replacing repeated data with something that takes up less room. |
