Anglican Church | The Church of England; a protestant denomination born out of the protestant reformation, dominant in Virginia and viewed as a symbol of English control in colonial America. |
John Calvin | A French theologian during the protestant reformation. He was the main leader and founder of Calvinism. He believed that people were predestined to go to Heaven or Hell and there is nothing a person can do to alter their eternal fate. |
Visible Saints/The Elect | Calvinist theory that everybody is already chosen to either go to Heaven or Hell. Only these people are able to go to Heaven. |
Puritans | Pilgrim separatists that rejected the Anglican Church and Catholicism; wanted to reform the church of England, or "purify" it. |
Mayflower Compact | The first governing document of Plymouth colony and what is now the United States. |
Congregational Church | A church that avoids any type of hie.rarchy; the people run the church and only answer to God |
Town Meetings | When the population of a community would come together and vote on rules and laws; common in early New England. |
John Winthrop | English Puritan that helped found the Massachusetts bay colony; had a vision for "godly commonwealth". |
William Bradford | A puritan who sailed aboard the Mayflower and eventually became governor of Plymouth. He is known for his journal entries |
Massachusetts Bay Colony | A joint-stock company that funded the founding of Boston; possessed a charter for the Americas |
Great (Puritan) Migration | The time period from 1630 to 1642 where several thousand Puritans moved to new England in search of religious freedom. |
Puritan/Protestant Ethic | The belief that everyone should live their life for God; hard work in everything you do |
Anne Hutchinson | A female minister who believed you could interpret the bible on your own. She helped change certain gender roles in early colonial times |
Antinomianism | The belief that anyone could interpret the bible, and didn't need a preacher to do it for them. |
Roger Williams | Founded the colony of Providence (present day Rhode island). Also known for his ideas of separating the church and state, land policies, and his relationship with the Narragansett Indians |
