Physical Features of Europe

Iberian Peninsula surround by 3 sides with water, Spain and Portugal are on the Iberian Peninsula
Pyrennes Mountains a natural barrier between Spain and France
Alps Mountains a natural border between Italy and Switzerland, France, Austria and several other countries in Europe .
Ural Mountains Runs 1,500 miles from north to south separating Europe Russia from Asia Russia. Rich in resources, but difficult to extract due to climate.
English Chanel a water way that separates England from Mainland Europe specifically France.
Atlantic Ocean A major ocean used in shipping and trading. The Gulf Stream in the Atlantic ocean brings warm water and winds to the United Kingdom and Europe.
Rhine River flows northward to the North Sea through Germany. Significant for commercial shipping and trading.
Danube River flows eastward toward the Black Sea. It flows through Germany and 10 other countries. A signficant waterway for trading
Northern European Plains spans from France to the Ural Mountains in Russia. It is a flat, rolling hills that is arable ( good for farming) Very good for agriculture.
Mediterranean Sea large body of water south of Europe, North of Africa, the region has warm, temperate climate.
Cause of Air Pollution in the UK burning of fossils fuels, specifically coal, from factories and homes causing signifcant pollution Also car exhaust
Effects of Air Pollution in the UK respiratory disorders, asthma, burning of lungs, eyes, nose from the exhaust.
Solutions to the Air Pollution of the UK Car emissions testing, alternative energy sources such as wind, water, and solar power, government regulations
Cause of Acid Rain in Germany burning of fossil fuels in factories causing air pollution. It collects in the clouds and will fall as rain, sleet, snow, or hail
Effects of Acid Rain in Germany damages the Black Forest in Germany, damages buildings, statues, pollutes water, harms animal and plant habitats.
Solution of Acid Rain in Germany Government regulations for car emissions, encourage public transportation, alternative energy sources.
Cause of Chernobyl disaster human error- two workers doing a safety test make a mistake and the reactor 4 overheated and exploded.
Effects of Chernobyl radioactive debris spread radiaton throughout Ukraine and Europe. this caused cancers, birth defects, radiation sickness, and death. the area is still full of radiation.
Solution to Chernobyl a concrete enclosure was made over Reactor #4, when is became to crumble, a steel sarcophagus was moved over the area to prevent radiation from leaking out.
arable means good for farming. This land has rich, fertile soil
urban cities, towns, areas with many resources such as good roads, hospitals, schools, stores, buildings
rural in the country area, not a lot of homes, buildings, resources are not close such as gas stations, stores, etc.
nuclear fallout radioactive debris that falls to the ground and spreads
permafrost Permanently frozen ground, make it difficult to extract resources or grow anything.
