AP Government

TermDefinition
Democracy The rule of many
Participatory/Direct democracy A government in which all or most citizens participate directly.
Representative democracy A government in which leaders make decisions by winning a competitive struggle for the popular vote.
Pluralist democracy Multiple groups control politics and compete against each other with resources.
Elite democracy A small group of elites (those with an abundance of political resources) control politics.
Class view The view that the government is dominated by capitalists.
Power elite view The view that the government is dominated by a few top leaders, most of whom are outside the government.
Bureaucratic view The view that appointed officials dominate the government over elected officials.
Pluralist view The view that competition among all affected interests shapes public policy. (no specific political resource controls the government; they all contribute.) -skills, money, popularity-
Creedal passion view The view that morally impassioned elites drive important politacl changes and politics.
Political Agenda Issues that people believe require governmental action.
Policy Entrepeneurs Activists in or out of the government who pull together a political majority on behalf of unorganized interests. (They bring attention to otherwise unpopular issues)
Limited government No one is above the law or the government, and people gain their power from the law or the Constitution.
Natural Rights Essential rights that are inalienable (unable to be taken away) even through laws, since you're born with them.
Popular Sovereignty Governmental powerr given by the people that can in theory be taken back if expectations are unmet.
Republicanism The political belief that the "better" government is one in which citizens choose their leaders and representatives through free elections.
Social Contract An implicit agreement among the members of a society and the government for cooperation for social benefit and the trade of some individual freedoms for protection from the state.
