| cardinal directions | North, South, East, West-- the main directions on a compass rose |
| intermediate directions | Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest -- the "in-between" directions on a compass rose |
| map key | shows what the symbols on a map represent. wavy line = water |
| map legend | show what the symbols on a map represent |
| latitude | lines that run West to East. They measure the distance in degrees from the zero line of latitude- The Equator |
| longitude | lines that run North to South and measure the distance in degrees from the zero line of longitude - The Prime Meridian |
| Equator | the zero line of latitude- it runs West to East line the rungs on a ladder |
| Prime Meridian | the zero line of longitude- it runs North to South . They are long lines |
| population density map | a type of map that shows how many people live in an area. The more populated the area, the more density you will see. |
| climate map | a map that shows the climate of a specific region. It is usually very colorful and shows areas such as tropical, tundra, arid climates |
| political map | this map shows the borders of countries, states, territories, and cities using a dark line for the borders. |
| physical map | this map shows the physical features like mountains, rivers, oceans, deserts, plains |
| relief map | this map will show how high or low the land is from sea level. |
| road map | this map shows where roads are located |
| resource map | this map shows natural resources in an area such as oil, minerals |
| agricultural map | this map shows what products are grown in the area such as timber, cattle, or wheat |
| map scale | can be found as part of the map key. It tells the relation between distance on a map. 1 inch=100miles. It varies on every map. |
| compass rose | a cross or star shape on a map that shows the cardinal and intermediate directions N,S,E,W and NE,NW, SE, SW |
