Unit 2: Maps

TermDefinition
relative location describes where a place is compared with other places
absolute location identifies a precise position on Earth's surface; often stated in longitude and latitude
hemisphere any half of the earth
continent one of several large landmasses on Earth
region an area broadly divided or identified by physical characteristics (physical geography)
equator the imaginary line that goes around the globe exactly halfway between the North Pole and the South Pole
prime meridian an imaginary line running from the North Pole through England and part of Africa to the South Pole; 0°
latitude a measure of the distance north or south of the equator; expressed in degrees, minutes, and seconds
longitude a measure of the distance east or west of the prime meridian; expressed in degrees, minutes, and seconds
cardinal directions North, South, East, West
intermediate directions Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest
map scale is used to show the relationship of distance shown on the map to real distance on the Earth.
Legend/Key shows you what symbols on the map mean.
inset map is a smaller map that shows a "larger" area of land around the map.
cartographers map-makers
physical map show features of the Earth such as, mountains, rivers, oceans, and forests.
political map Maps that show countries, states, cities, and capitals
population map A map showing the number of people living in a certain area.
vegetation map Special purpose map that show different types of plants found in a region
climate map Shows information about the climate of an area; like the specific climatic zones based on the temperature, the amount of snow an area receives or average number of cloudy days. These maps normally use colors to show different climatic areas.
historical map Special-purpose map that provides information about a place at a certain time in history.
road map A map for motorists that shows the highways of an area.
coordinate system Together, lines of latitude and longitude form a grid system
physical feature Characteristic of a place occurring naturally, such as a land form, body of water, climate pattern, or resources.
political feature a representation of a country's territories, boundaries, and capital(s), cities, etc. on paper or other material
