Boycott Withdrawal of political, social and economic support of a country/organisation as a form of protest
Embargo Stopping of trade, usually a specific product. e.g. arms embargo
Autonomy Independence, being able to make your own decisions, to manage yourself
Referendum An 'election/vote in which people of a country are asked to vote for or against a government propose
Militant Ready or eager to fight in support if a political or social cause Formal organisation to take on the fight
Disinvestment (International) The decision by many countries not to trade with or invest in apartheid South Africa
Sanctions Economic or other measures, usually applied by several nations together, to force a country to make changes (to follow international law)
State of Emergency A proclamation issued by a country's government to give extended powers to the police and the military in order to suppress unrest
Conscientious Objector Person who chooses to avoid military service for moral or religious reasons
Subversive Wanting to undermine the authority of an institution, usually a government
Black Local Authorities Act 1982 Provided for the establishment of a series of local government structures in black townships; attempt a reform
Total onslaught What the apartheid government perceived as the organised effort of communist forces to overthrow them
Total strategy The strategy the apartheid government used to fight against 'total onslaught'
Trade Union Organised association of workers
Tricameral Constitution 1983 South Africa - gave limited political rights to coloured and Indian people but exclude
Ungovernable Impossible to control; later called 'prople's power'
