Hydrocortisone | Pharmaceutical version of cortisol that has anti-inflammatory properties |
Adrenal shock | Life-threatening insufficiency of cortisol that may be brought about by the sudden cessation of a glucocorticoid regimen |
ACTH therapy | Adrenocorticotropic hormone therapy; it may be used to treat a variety of conditions such as seizures or spasms in children or certain types of adrenal insufficiency |
RICE | Treatment for inflammation that consists of rest, ice, compression, and elevation |
Resolution | End of inflammation in which inflammatory cells undergo apoptosis and subsequent clearing |
Regeneration | Type of healing in which new tissue growth completely restores damaged tissue to its normal state |
Replacement | Type of healing also known as scarring, in which severely damaged or non-regenerable tissue is replaced by connective tissue |
Granulation | Process of forming highly vascularized connective tissue during wound healing |
Angiogenesis | Formation of new blood vessels |
Contracture | Shortening and hardening of muscles, tendons, or other tissue, often leading to deformity and rigidity of joints |
Stenosis | Narrowing of one of the body’s passageways, such as the spinal cord |
Adhesion | Band of scar tissue that forms abnormal connections between body parts |
Keloid | Thick, raised scar caused by excessive collagen deposition during healing |
1st degree (superficial partial-thickness) burn | Burn that affects only the epidermis, or outer layer, of the skin |
2nd degree (deep partial-thickness) burn | Burn that affects both the epidermis and dermis |
3rd or 4th degree (full-thickness) burn | Burn that destroys the epidermis and the dermis and damages the subcutaneous layers, including fat, muscle, or even bone |
Rule of Nines | Method for evaluating the severity of burns that divides the body into certain percentages, most of which are multiples of 9 |
Shock | Life-threatening condition associated with insufficient systemic blood circulation |
Skin graft | Surgical procedure in which a piece of skin is transplanted from one area to another |
