| Tachycardia | Accelerated heart rate (over 100 beats per minute) |
| Referred pain | Pain perceived at a site distant from the source |
| Phantom pain | Pain that seems to be coming from a part of the body that is no longer there, such as an amputated limb |
| Migraine | Throbbing or pulsing headache, usually on one side of the head that is often accompanied by nausea and sensitivity to light or sound |
| Neuropathic pain | Pain caused by damage to the somatosensory system that is often described as a burning or shooting pain |
| Acetaminophen | Drug used to treat minor aches and pains and reduce fever; too much can cause liver damage |
| Aspirin | Acetylsalicylic acid; a synthetic NSAID based on a willow bark extract that reduces pain, fever, inflammation, and platelet activation |
| Ibuprofen | Short-lived NSAID that reduces pain, fever, and inflammation |
| Naproxen | Long-lived NSAID that reduces pain, fever, and inflammation; too much can cause stomach irritation |
| Codeine | Highly addictive opioid used to relieve moderate to severe pain |
| Oxycodone | Highly addictive semi-synthetic opioid used to relieve moderate to severe pain; it’s an active ingredient in Percocet and Oxycontin |
| Morphine | Highly addictive natural opioid used to relieve severe pain; most frequently used in hospice care |
| Patient-Controlled Analgesia (PCA) | Type of pain management system in which the patient determines the frequency of doses |
| Intractable pain | Pain that cannot be controlled by medication or other therapies |
| Rhizotomy | Surgery that selectively destroys the dorsal root nerve fibers responsible for transmitting pain signals |
| Cordotomy | Surgery that selectively destroys pain-conducting tracts in the spinal cord |
| Local anesthesia | Anesthesia that blocks transmission of pain from a specific, small area of the body |
| Regional anesthesia | Anesthesia that blocks transmission of pain from a large area of the body, such as the legs or abdomen |
| General anesthesia | Anesthesia that causes loss of consciousness |
