| Excipient | Medically inactive substance that serves as a vehicle for a drug or other active substance, such as coloring or flavoring agents, preservatives, and fillers |
| Compliance | Degree of conformity to directions regarding the timing, dosage, and frequency of a treatment |
| Medicare | Federal government-mandated medical insurance program for people over 65 or with certain disabilities |
| Medicaid | Public insurance program that provides healthcare to low-income families and individuals |
| NDC number | National Drug Code, a unique, 3-part number that serves as the FDA’s identifier for a drug |
| Controlled substance | Drug that is tightly regulated by the government due to its potential for abuse or addiction |
| Narcotic | Drug or other substance (typically an opiate) that affects mood, behavior, or pain perception, especially one sold illegally |
| DEA number | Identifier assigned to healthcare providers by the DEA that enables them to prescribe controlled substances |
| Pseudoephedrine | Drug that relieves nasal congestion due to respiratory illnesses or allergies; it can also be used to produce methamphetamines |
| Emetic | Substance that causes vomiting |
| Antiemetic | Drug that inhibits or prevents vomiting |
| Sedative or Tranquilizer | Drug that produces a calming effect and may induce sleep; sedatives also tend to have analgesic properties |
| NSAID | Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that reduces pain, fever, and the risk of blood clots |
| Antitussive | Drug that prevents or relieves a cough |
| Expectorant | Type of cough medicine that thins and loosens mucus in the airways |
| Antibiotic | Drug that kills bacteria or inhibits their growth and replication |
| Antihypertensive | Drug that lowers blood pressure |
| Analgesic | Drug that relieves pain |
| Anesthetic | Agent that produces a general or local loss of sensation, including pain |
| Anticoagulant | Drug that inhibit blood clotting without directly affecting platelet activation |
| Antiplatelet | Drug that inhibits blood clotting by directly inhibiting platelet activation |
| Opiate | Pain-relieving drug derived from or related to opium that binds to opioid receptors; morphine is an example |
