Introduction to Pathophysiology, Part 3

TermDefinition
Lesion Region in an organ or tissue that has suffered damage through injury or disease, such as a wound, ulcer, abscess, tumor, etc.
Remission Subsidence of the signs and symptoms of a chronic disease
Precipitating factor Trigger for an acute disease episode, not to be confused with a predisposing (risk) factor
Complication Secondary health problem that arises after an initial disease diagnosis and disrupt the healing process
Therapy Treatment measures used to promote recovery or slow the progress of a disease
Sequelae Negative aftereffects of a disease, condition, or injury
Epidemiology Branch of medicine which deals with the incidence, distribution, and possible control of disease
Epidemic Unexpected rise in the number of cases of an infectious disease within a given area
Communicable Able to spread from one person to another
Atrophy Decrease in the size of cells, resulting in reduced tissue mass
Hypertrophy Increase in the size of individual cells, resulting in greater tissue mass
Hyperplasia Increased in cell number that results in greater tissue mass
Metaplasia Replacement of one mature cell type by another mature cell type
Dysplasia Abnormal arrangement of cells accompanied by variations in cell size and shape, the presence of large nuclei, and increased rates of mitosis
Anaplasia Loss of cell differentiation that tends to occur during tumorigenesis
Neoplasia New growth that occurs during tumor formation; it may be benign or malignant
Infarction Obstruction of the blood supply to an organ or region of tissue, typically by a thrombus or embolus, causing local death of the tissue
Necrosis Death of most or all of the cells in an organ or tissue due to disease, injury, or failure of the blood supply
Liquefaction necrosis Process by which dead cells liquefy under the influence of certain enzymes
Coagulation necrosis Cell or tissue death characterized by protein denaturation
Fat necrosis Breakdown of fatty tissue that occurs in response to certain infections or enzymes
Caseous necrosis Type of coagulation necrosis characterized by the formation of a thick, yellowish, cheesy substance
