| Syndrome | Collection of signs and symptoms for a particular disease process that often affect more than one organ and usually occur together in response to a certain condition |
| Convalescence | Rehabilitation or recovery period |
| Nosocomial | Disease that is the result of exposure to infection in the health care environment |
| Chronic | Lasting more than 6 months and insidious or gradual in onset |
| Exacerbation | Flaring or worsening of disease symptoms |
| Morbidity | Rate of disease or other non-lethal outcomes in a population |
| Mortality | Death rate in a population |
| Prognosis | Predicted course of a disease or ailment |
| Iatrogenic | Resulting from medical intervention or error |
| Predisposing factors | Tendencies or risk factors that increase the likelihood that an individual will develop a particular disease |
| Incidence | Number of new cases in a given population within a certain time period |
| Prevalence | Number of new and existing cases within a specific population and time period |
| Pandemic | Increase in the number of infectious disease cases in multiple regions around the globe |
| Primary prevention | Set of proactive health measures taken to preempt disease development |
| Secondary prevention | Early detection and treatment of disease through screening |
| Tertiary prevention | Rehabilitation measures designed to minimize the effects of an existing disease |
| Prophylaxis | Set of measures designed to preserve health and prevent the spread of disease |
| Subclinical state | Occurrence of pathological changes without obvious manifestations in the patient |
| Prodromal period | Early stage of disease development in which an individual is aware of changes in the body without being able to point to specific signs of disease |
| Manifestations | Clinical evidence or effects (signs and symptoms) of a disease |
