Louisiana Purchase 1803. 15 states and 2 CA provinces. Eliminated French control of the US and kickstarted expansionism
Embargo of 1807 TJ closes all ports to exports and restricts imports from Britain. Nascent US economy is harmed, creates panic of 1809. Leads to war of 1812.
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo 1848. Ends the Mexican-American war, which begun when the US annexed TX, provoked Mexico. MX cedes ~55% of territory to the US. US pays 15 million dollars, forgives 3 million of Mexican debt. Promises to prevent Apache incursion into Mexican territory,
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo: So What. Provoked tension with the Apache, leading to the Apache wars of 1860-62. Symbolizes US expansionism.
Manifest Destiny 1840s: annexation of TX, conquest of CA, acquisiton of OR. Provoked war with mexico, which reopened the debate around slavery.
USS Maine Feb 15, 1898. Kills 262 American sailors, led for demands against Spain by americans. Apr 25: US declares war. Troops free Cuba from Spanish rule. Spain sues for peace by july.
USS Maine: so what? Reveals imperialist agenda of the US. Spain cedes guam, PR, and philippines to US. Leads to the philippine american war that ends in 1902.
Pearl harbor: when 1941.
38th parallel: when 1950-53

women's suffrage movement beginning of the 20th. Working and middle class women collaborate on labor and suffrage problems. NWP led by Alice Paul is more radical than NAWSA.
Palmer raids 1917: fear of communism, first red scare. AG Mitchell Palmer. unsuccessful. govt turns on palmer. used espionage act.
BVBE 1954. turning point for civil rights movement because the law was now on their side.
