| Political Map | A map showing political features (human made) of a region such as countries |
| Physical Map | A map that shows the major physical features (nature made) of a region such as mountains |
| special purpose map | a map that shows specific information such as climate |

| cardinal directions | North / South / East / West |
| intermediate directions | Northeast / Northwest / Southeast / Southwest |
| map scale | compares a distance on a map with a distance in the real world |
| Map Legend or Key | A box or other display on a map that explains the meaning of the symbols used on the map. |
| Symbol | a graphic used to represent a real-world feature on a map |
| equator | Zero degrees latitude / An imaginary circle around the middle of the earth / halfway between the North Pole and the South Pole |
| Prime Meridian | 0 degrees longitude /imaginary line that runs North to South and splits the earth into east and west hemispheres |
| Longitude | Distance east or west of the prime meridian |
| Latitude | distance north or south of the Equator |
