Political Map A map showing political features (human made) of a region such as countries
Physical Map A map that shows the major physical features (nature made) of a region such as mountains
special purpose map a map that shows specific information such as climate
Compass Rose A tool on a map showing cardinal (N
cardinal directions North / South / East / West
intermediate directions Northeast / Northwest / Southeast / Southwest
map scale compares a distance on a map with a distance in the real world
Map Legend or Key A box or other display on a map that explains the meaning of the symbols used on the map.
Symbol a graphic used to represent a real-world feature on a map
equator Zero degrees latitude / An imaginary circle around the middle of the earth / halfway between the North Pole and the South Pole
Prime Meridian 0 degrees longitude /imaginary line that runs North to South and splits the earth into east and west hemispheres
Longitude Distance east or west of the prime meridian
Latitude distance north or south of the Equator
hemisphere half of the earth
