The US’s intentions in the 2003 Gulf War were to end Saddam Hussein’s rule, which was caused by tyranny, and to destroy Iraq’s weapons, which would cause mass destruction. 2003 Gulf War
An uprising that started when a man set himself on fire. It was spread throughout all of social media. Africa, northern countries, and most of the Middle East were in the uprising. This would lead to some leaders having to step down or wind up dead. Arab Spring
An announcement, released by the British government, saying that they approved the formation of a “national home for the Jewish people” within Palestine and an Ottoman region with a little Jewish minority community. Balfour Declaration
In the 1950s-1980s, the United States conflicted with the Soviet Union. These countries had to fight through proxy states, which involved the Middle East countries. They did this because they both had nuclear bombs. The Cold War
On May 14, 1948, David Ben-Gurion made Israel a nation. The US started recognizing Israel as a new nation on the same day. Establishment of Israel
An international crisis that occurred in 1979-1981. Militants in Iran took 66 American citizens in Tehrān, 52 were held hostage. This had dramatic effects on domestic politics in the US and ruined the US-Iranian relationship for decades. Iran Hostage Crisis
A settlement in 1918 between the German and Turkish countries. This happened in Syria. They divided Britain and France through this method. Middle East Mandates
In September 1960, Juan Pablo Perez Alfonzo and Abdullah Tariki founded the OPEC company and joined the oil industry. They did this so large companies couldn’t lower the oil prices. OPEC Formation
When WW1 broke out, the Ottoman Empire teamed with the Central Powers after WW1 broke out (1914). The Central Powers fought France, Russia, Great Britain, and the US. Ottoman Empire
On July 26, 1956, the Egyptian president nationalized the Suez Canal, owned by the Suez Canal Company, which was controlled by the French and Britsh. Britain, France, and Israel combined armies and made a combined military operation on Egypt. Suez Canal Crisis
On June 5, 1967, Egypt and other countries started war against Israel because there was a heightened tension when Gamal Abdel Nasser got mad at his Arab neighbors. Israel took over many places in the Middle East. The war ended on June 10, six days later. Six Day War
On May 1916, France and Britain divided the Arab territories of the former Ottoman Empire into spheres of influence. Britain and France also retained free passage and trade in other influences. Sykes-Picot Accord
The war first started by peaceful protests around Syria. Protesters were either beaten or shot. Syrians began to realize that the Assad regime can’t be reasoned with and resolved to violence to solve problems. The US Army and Europe helped the protesters. Syrian Civil War
