What happens during a potlatch? During a potlatch, families displayed their rank and prosperity and gave drinks, food, and gifts to the community.
What is a pueblo? Pueblos are villages of large, apartment style compounds made of stone, adobe, or sun-baked clay.
What was tradition of the Adena influenced other civilizations? They constructed huge mounds to bury their dead, along with the person's belongings.
What were common religious beliefs of the early Americans? Nearly all Native Americans the world was filled with nature spirits.
What did Native Americans believe about the land? They believed the land was sacred and could not be bought or sold.
What is a glyph? A glyph is a symbolic picture used as part of the writing system for carving messages in stone.
What is the Popol Vuh? The Popol Vuh is a famous book that recounts the Maya's version of the story of creation.
What were the religious beliefs of the Mayan people? The Mayan believed in many gods (polytheism) and their rulers were thought of as god-like.
How did The Maya worship their gods? The Maya worshipped their gods by praying, making offerings of food/flowers/incense, piercing their bodies, and human sacrifice.
How did the Mayan civilization decline? The Mayan civilization ended in a mystery and the reasons are unknown.
Why was obsidian important? Obsidian was used to make razor-sharp weapons.
How did the Triple Alliance form? The Triple Alliance formed when the Aztecs joined with two other city-states, Texcoco and Tlacopan.
What was the Great Temple? The Great Temple was a giant pyramid with twin temples; one dedicated to the sun god and the other dedicated to the rain god.
What happened during Aztec religious ceremonies? At religious ceremonies, priests made offerings to the gods and presented ritual dramas, songs, and dances.
What started problems in the Aztec Empire? When the Aztecs began demanding more tribute and sacrifice, it led major problems.
What did the Inca build their empire on? The Inca built their empire on cultural foundations that were thousands of years old.
Who was Pachacuti? Pachacuti was an Inca leader who expanded the Inca empire through military force and political alliances.
What is a quipu and what is its purpose? A quipu is a set of knotted strings, used to record numerical infomation.
What was Incan religion like? The Incan believed in multiple gods and nature spirits.
What was the outcome of Huayna Capac's death? After Huayna Capac's death, the Incan empire split between his two sons and civil war broke out.
