Who fought in the English Civil War? Royalists vs Parliament and Oliver Cromwell
Who is Oliver Cromwell? He was a military dictatory who acted as ruler during the English interregnum.
What is the Interregnum? A span of time (during the English Civil War) with no king.
Why are the restoration colonies called "Restoration" colonies? The colonies that were created after King Charles II was restored to the throne.
The Carolina colony split into which 2 colonies? North Carolina and South Carolina
What was the main export in South Carolina? Rice and Indigo
What was the main export in North Carolina? Tobacco
Who were the local native tribes in the Carolina colonies? Yamasee and Cree
Why did the English win the Yamasee war of 1715 to 1718? The Cherokee made an alliance with the English.
What did New Netherland change its name to after England took it from the Dutch? New York
What did New Amsterdam change it's name to after the English took it from the Dutch? New York
How long did the Anglo-Dutch wars go on? About 20 years (1650s to 1670s)
How was the Duke of York related to King Charles II They were brothers
What was the main difference between New Netherland and all of the other colonies? Diversity. Religious and racial diversity.
What is the Charter of Liberties and Privileges act? It was a law that laid out political organization of the colonies.
What did the Charter of Liberties (1683) change? It set up election procedures, created 12 counties and guaranteed certain individual rights for colonists
What were the Five Nations of the Iroquios? a confederacy of native tribes
Who is William Penn? The Founder of Pennsylvania
What were some of the differences between the Pennsylvania colony and other colonies at that time? Religious freedom. Social equality. Anti-Slavery.
What was the main religious belief of the Quakers that separated them from all the others? They believed that all people, regardless of race, gender, social status, all have an "inner light".
What were the Navigation Acts? British law that restricts colonial trade. Goods could no longer be purchased from other countries.
What were the Vice-admirality courts? These were courts that do not have a jury.
What were some of the consequenses of the Navigation Acts? New England and others had to smuggle sugar and other goods in order to continue commerce. The colonists also had to pay higher taxes on shipments.
