Irish Famine

+ Ireland in 1840

Where was Ireland ruled from? In 1840, Ireland was ruled directly from London.
Who owned most of the land? Landlords owned most of the land
Who did Landlords rent land to? They rented land to tenant farmers.
Who did the farmers employ? Some farmers employed labourers to help them out.
Who Collected Rent Twice a Year? The landlord's agent collected rent twice a year.
Why were tenants evicted? Tenants could be evicted for any reason , but they were usually only evicted for non-payment for rent.
What were Cottiers? Some labourers were cottiers. Cottiers rented a small plot of ground - called a conacre - from a farmer.
What caused poverty in the 1840's? The growing population, failed harvests and dependence on farming were all causes of poverty.
What were the principal causes of the famine? Rise in population, Blight, Subdivision of land and Dependence on the potatoes
