What is a Fugitive? A person who flees or tries to escape
What is a Civil War? A war between citizens of the same country
What is a Martyr? A person who is killed because of their religious or other beliefs
What does Secede mean? Withdraw formally from membership of a federal union, an alliance, or a political or religious organization
What is Arsenal? A collection of weapons and military equipment stored by a country, person, or group.
What are State Rights? the rights and powers held by individual US states rather than by the federal government
What was the Fugitive Slave Act? The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was part of the Compromise of 1850. The act required that slaves be returned to their owners, even if they were in a free state.
What was the Kansas-Nebraska Act? The Kansas-Nebraska Act repealed the Missouri Compromise, created two new territories, and allowed for popular sovereignty. It also produced a violent uprising known as “Bleeding Kansas."
What was the Battle of Fort Sumter? Forces from the Confederate States of America attacked the United States military garrison at Fort Sumter, South Carolina. Two days later, the fort surrendered. No one was killed.
How did Dred Scott influence the period leading up to the Civil War? The Dred Scott Decision outraged abolitionists, who saw the Supreme Court's ruling as a way to stop debate about slavery in the territories.
How did John Brown influence the period leading up to the Civil War? Brown's raid helped make any further accommodation between North and South nearly impossible and thus became an important impetus of the Civil War.
