Reconstruction

| reconstruction | the period when the South rejoined the Union and forced to change their laws that gave rights to African Americans |
| Freedman's Bureau | an organization that provided food, clothing, medical care, and legal advice to freed slaves and the poor |
| sharecropping | a system in which landowners let poor farmers use small areas of their land, and in return, the farmers gave the landowners a share of the crop |
| Jim Crow Laws | laws that segregated blacks and whites in public facilities Ex: restrooms, water fountains, theaters, busses etc. |
| 13th Amendment | made slavery illegal in the United States |
| 14th Amendment | granted citizenship and equal civil and legal rights to slaves who had been emancipated (freed) after the Civil War |
| Why was the 14th amendment created? | created in response to the Black Codes that the Southern States created (poll tax, literacy test) |
| 15th Amendment | gave all male citizens the right to vote |

| poll tax | A requirement that citizens pay a tax in order to register to vote |
| literacy test | A test given to persons to prove they can read and write before being allowed to register to vote |
| poll taxes and literacy tests | How Southern states got around the 15th Amendment, guaranteeing African-Americans the right to vote. |
| How was sharecropping similar to slavery? | The land owner was still in charge. If they owed debt they had to stay on the land. Usually 40% interest. This kept blacks and poor whites in a system of slavery until mid 20th century (1950s). |
