Sport - Skeletal

Sport - Skeletal System - response to exercise

QuestionAnswer
What are the 3 immediate/short-term responses of the skeletal system? Synovial fluid production, uptake of minerals & increased pliability of ligaments
Why is calcium important? it makes the bones stronger which means less chance of injury
Why do tendons need to be pliable? to increase the range of movement at the joint
What are the 3 long-term responses of the skeletal system? Increase in bone density & strength, increased ligament strength & increased thickness of articular cartilage
Why do bones need to be dense & strong? less likely to get injured (e.g. fractures)
Why do ligaments need to be strong? to stabilise the joint which reduces the risk of injury (e.g dislocation)
Why does the articular cartilage need to be thick? to protect the joint from wear and tear
What is 'arthritis'? inflammation in a synovial joint - causing pain & stiffness in the joint
What is the most common type of arthritis? osteoarthritis
What causes osteoarthritis? general wear & tear over a long period of time
What can prevent arthritis & osteoporosis? regular exercise
What does arthritis reduce the amount of? cartilage (which results in the ends of the bones rubbing together)
Why does exercise help with arthritis? the joints produce more synovial fluid which reduces the friction between the bones & provide minerals to the cartilage
What 3 additional factors can affect the skeletal system? Arthritis, Osteoporosis & age
What is 'osteoporosis'? weakening of bones caused by a loss in calcium or lack of vitamin D
What happens to your bones as you get older? they lose their mineral density and become brittle, fragile & more likely to break
What types of training are good for preventing osteoporosis? resistance (weight) training & weight bearing exercise (to increase bone density)
How does exercise help prevent osteoporosis? increases bone mineral density
Why is resistance (weight) training harmful to children? their bones are still growing and putting force on them can damage the epiphyseal plates
Where are the epiphyseal plates found? at the end of long bones
Damage to the epiphyseal plates can result in what? stunted bone growth

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
