What is 'flexion'? moving the joint into a bent position
What is 'extension'? straightening a limb
What is 'dorsi-flexion'? an upward movement at the ankle or wrist
What is 'plantar-flexion'? pointing toes downwards
What is 'lateral flexion'? bending sideways
What is 'horizontal flexion & extension'? bending & straightening the elbow in front of your body
What is 'hyperextension'? straightening a joint beyond its normal range
What is 'abduction'? movement away from the body's vertical midline
What is 'adduction'? movement towards the body's vertical midline
What is 'horizontal abduction & adduction'? moving your arm across your body & back again
What is 'rotation'? circular movement around an axis of a joint
What is 'circumduction'? circular movement that is a combination of flexion, extension, adduction and abduction
Example of 'flexion' bending the elbow (bicep curl)
Example of 'extension' straightening the elbow
Example of 'dorsi-flexion' toes upwards when hurdling
Example of 'plantar-flexion' toes pointed when diving/dancing
