What are examples of slightly moveable joints (cartilaginous)? Between the individual vertebrae
What are the characteristics of moveable joints (synovial)? freely moveable
What are examples of moveable joints (synovial)? elbow, shoulder, thumb
What determines the range of movement of joints? the shape of bones
What does 'synovial fluid' do? lubricates and reduces friction of the joint
What does the 'synovial membrane' do? contains and releases synovial fluid
What does 'articular cartilage' do? prevents bones from rubbing & acts as a shock absorber
What does the 'joint capsule' do? surrounds & protects the synovial joint and stabilises the joint
What do 'ligaments' do? join bone to bone & help stabilise the joint
What does a 'bursa' do? provides a cushion between the tendons & bones, reduces friction
What is a 'bursa'? a fluid filled sac between tendons & bones
Where are hinge joints found? knee, elbow & ankle
Where are ball & socket joints found? shoulder & hip
Where are pivot joints found? neck
Where are condyloid joints found? wrist
Where are saddle joints found? thumb
Where are gliding joints found? hands & feet
What type of movement do hinge joints have? flexion, extension, plantar flexion & dorsi flexion
What type of movement do ball & socket joints have? flexion, extension, adduction, abduction, rotation & circumduction
What type of movement do pivot joints have? rotation
What type of movement do condyloid joints have? flexion, extension, adduction, abduction, & circumduction
What type of movement do gliding joints have? limited movement in all directions
