John Adams 1801 Helped write the Declaration of Independence. 1st President to live in the White House. Died 50 years to the day after the Declaration of Independence was signed.
Thomas Jefferson 1809 Author of the Declaration of Independence. US bought the Louisiana Purchase which doubled the size of US. Established U of Virginia. Died same day as John Adams
James Madison 1817 Made sure the US Constitution was based on "separation of powers." Fought & won the War of 1812 Star-Spangled Banner written by Francis Scott Key.
James Monroe 1825 1st President to display his own hair in public. Missouri Compromise was devised to address slavery. Monroe Doctrine written to protect Latin America from Europe. Like Adams & Jefferson, died on July 4.
John Q Adams 1829 Son of 2nd president. Erie canal opened. Accused of rigging election over Henry Clay. Installed the 1st pool table in the White House. Kept an alligator as a pet.
