What does the thorax have to do to take air in? increase

What is 'inspiration'? breathing in
What is 'expiration'? breathing out
What do the diaphragm & external intercostal muscles do when you inspire (breathe in)? contract
What do the diaphragm & external intercostal muscles do when you expire (breathe out)? relax
When does the pressure inside the lungs reduce? when you breathe in (inspire)
When does the pressure inside the lungs increase? when you breathe out (expire)
What is gas exchange? the process of exchanging one type of gas for another
Where does gas exchange happens in the lungs? diffusion between air in the alveoli & blood in the capillaries surrounding their walls
What does gas exchange do in the lungs? delivers oxygen from the lungs to the bloodstream, removes carbon dioxide from the bloodstream to the lungs
How does oxygen diffuse into the blood? through the thin walls of the capillaries, through the red blood cell membrane & latches onto haemoglobin
How does carbon dioxide diffuse from the blood? from the blood plasma into the alveoli
