Pharisees | Educated people who both observed and enforced Jewish law |
Sadducees | Came from elite and powerful background, respected Romans |
Pax Romana | Roman peace a period of relative peace and stability 200 years |
Zealots | Hated the Romans, believed that God would send a Messiah that would save the Jewish from oppression |
Resurrection | Coming back to life after being declared dead through divine interaction |
Baptism | A practiced ritual cleansing by plunging into water |
Crucifixion | A slow and painful Roman method of execution. Jesus was sentenced to crucifixion. |
Martyrs | People who die for their beliefs. Many Christians were martyred for their belief in Jesus. |
Bible | Holy text that is composed of two major sections: Old Testament and New Testament. Sacred to Christians |
Old Testament | First part of Christian Bible with 39 books promises Messiah will come |
Salvation | Deliverance from sin brought about by faith in Jesus |
New Testament | Second part of the Christian Bible written in Greek, records teaching of Jesus and his followers |
Gospels | Translated as ¨Good News¨ first 4 books of the new testament, describes life of Jesus 4 points of view: Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John |
Parables | Stories with a moral, Jesus often used parables to explain important lessons |
Epistles | Formal letters written by early leaders in the Christian church. Paul wrote a number of Epistles that explain Christian belief |
Trinity | The Christian understanding that God is represented in 3 persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. |
Ethics | Issues of right and wrong and how to treat people. |
Golden Rule | Rule of conduct that Jesus taught in Mathew 7:12 and Luke 6:31 ¨ do to others as you would have them do to you¨ |
Ascension | The ascent of Christ into Heaven on the 40th day after the Resurrection. |
Denominations | Christians have divided themselves into different branches. Differences come down to church, tradition, worship style, and history |
Good Friday | The Friday before Easter Sunday on which the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ commemorated. |
Easter | Resurrection of Jesus Christ 3 days after he died he arose into heaven. |
Providence | The protective care of God or of nature of spiritual power. |
Messiah | The promised deliverer of the Jewish nation prophesied in the Old Testament Hebrew word meaning Christ. |
Sermon on The Mount | Speech delivered by Jesus to his disciples went over fundamentals of Christianity |
The Great Commission | The instructions from Jesus to his disciples to spread the gospel to all the nations of the world |
Disciples | A personal follower of Jesus during his life, especially one of the twelve Apostles |
Conversion | The fact of changing ones religion or belief system |
Sin | An immortal act of considered to be a transgression or violation against Gods laws |
Repentance | The action of repenting; sincere regret or remorse. Each person who turns to God and Jesus in genuine repentance and faith will be saved. |
