2 factors of our system to understand deviance production as a mode of production, it forms the foundation of infrastructure of our society, and capitalist mode of production contains contradictions which reflect the internal tendencies of capitalism
Superstructure of society emerges from and reflects the ongoing development of economic forces (the infrastructure); preserves the dominance of the ruling class through a system of class controls in class societies; regulates and manages problem populations
Class controls institutionalized in family, church, private associations, media, schools, and state, and provide a mechanism for coping with the contradictions and achieving the aims of capitalist development

Problem population first process example Karl Marx discussed how increased social redundance is inherent in the development of the capitalist mode of production; production of a relative surplus-population involves the creation of a class which is economically redundant
Problem population second process example the institutions which make up the superstructure of capitalist society originate and are maintained to guarantee the interest of the capitals class, but also reproduce the contradictions of capitalist order; ex. schooling determines social class
Social junk people in society who reside in the failure, inability, or refusal to participate in roles supportive of capitalist society
Social dynamite those in society who actively call into question established relationships, especially of production and domination
What is the tautology of brain-mind behavior? the brain is construed as an independent variable at one time and a dependent at the next. Defects within brain chemistry are seen to cause mental illness at one time and are the result of it at other times.
How is depression being used as an example to show the myths of chemical mental illness? welabel those who are experiencingdepression symptoms&have some sort of lack in their life as notbeing depressed, but we labelothers who are not facing hardships&are depressed as depresseddespite both having the same chemical compositions in thebrain
What do norms do? define illegitimate practices and set a boundary between legitimate and illegitimate practices to make us aware of the behavior that is right or wrong
What does the article "Illegitimate Means and Delinquent Subculture" have to do with the availability of illegitimate means? it discusses how there are socially structured variations in the availability of illegitimate means; access to illegitimate roles is limited by social and psychological factors
What is the issue with “Learning and Performance Structures”? The community one grows up in provides you with specific ways to learn and be trained in certain skills. Criminal behavior is learned and the social structures within communities can teach people how to be criminals and engage in criminal behaviors
Theory of anomie views the individual primarily in terms of the legitimate opportunity structure and poses questions regarding differentials in access to legitimate routes or success-goals or illegitimate avenues to success goals
Differential opportunity hypothesis looks at the individual in relation to both legitimate and illegitimate system and ask how the relative availability of illegitimate opportunities affects the resolution of adjustment problems leading to deviant behavior
