Christianity Vocab

TermDefinition
Pharisees Educated people who both observed and enforced Jewish law.
Sadducees Came from elite and powerful backgrounds. Very religious people. Cooperated with roman occupation.
Pax Romana Latin word for "Roman Peace," had peace that lasted over 200 years.
Zealots Opposed Roman occupation. Believed God would send a messiah that would save the Jewish people from oppression.
Resurrection Coming back to life after being declared dead through divine intervention.
Baptism A practiced ritual cleansing by plunging into water.
Crucifixion A slow and painful Roman method of execution. Jesus was sentenced to crucifixion.
Martyrs People who died for their religion and beliefs. Many Christians were martyred for their belief in Jesus.
Bible The holy text that is composed of the Old Testament and the New Testament. Sacred book of Christians.
Old Testament The first part of the bible. 39 books and corresponding to Hebrew bible. Promised that a messiah will come to save God's people.
New Testament The second part of the bible, records the life of Jesus Christ and his earliest followers.
Salvation Deliverance from sin, brought about by faith in Jesus Christ.
Gospel Translated as "Good News." The first four books of newt describe the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, four different point of views: Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John.
Parables Stories with amoral. Jesus often used them to explain important lessons.
Epistles Formal letters written by early leaders in church. Paul wrote a number of Epistles that explained Christian beleifes in great detail.
Golden Rule Rule of ethics written in Matthew 7:12, Luke 6:31 "do to others as you world have them to do to you."
Ascension The ascent of Christ into heaven on the fortieth day after the resurrection.
Denominations Christians have divided themselvs into different branches. Differences come down to church tradition, worship style. and history.
Good Friday The Friday before Easter Sunday , the crucifixion of Jesus is commemorated Christians believed he paid for personal sins.
Easter Most important Christian festival, celebrating resurrection of Jesus three days after he was killed.
Providence The protective care of God as a spiritual power.
Messiah The promised deliverer to the Jewish nation prophe in the Old Testament. Hebrew word meaning Christ.
Sermon on the Mount Speech delivered by Jesus to the Beatitudes and tought important fundamentals.
The Great Commision The instruction from Jesus to his disciples, spread gospel to all the nations of the world.
Disciples A personal follower of Jesus during his life, especially one of the twelve Apostles.
Conversion The fact of changing one's religion or belief system.
Sin An immoral not considered to be a transgression or violation against Gods law.
Repentance The action of representing; sincere regret or remorse. Each person who turns to God and Jesus in genuine repentance and faith will be saved.
