Pharisees | educated people who both observed and enforced Jewish law |
Sadducees | came from elite and powerful backrounds. Supported traditions of Solomon's.Very religous and concetrated with Roman occupation |
Pax Romana | Latin word for "Roman peace" was a period of relitive peave and stability in 27 B.C. |
Zealots | opposed Roman occupation. Believed that God would send a Messiah that would save the Jewish people from opression |
Ressurection | coming back to life after being declared dead through divine intervention |
Baptism | a practiced ritual cleansing by plunging into water |
Cruxfixion | a slow and painful Roman method of excution.Jesus was senteced to cruxifixion. |
Martyrs | people who die for their beleifs. Many Christians were martyed for their belief in Jesus. |
Bible | Holy text that is composed of two major sections:Old Testment and New Testment. Sacred book for Christians. |
Old Testment | the first part of the Christian Bible, comprising 39 books and corrsponding aproximetly to the Hebrew Bible, Promised a Messiah will save gods people |
Salvation | deliverence from sin a its consequences believed by Christians to be brought about fath in Jesus Christ. |
New Testment | the second pat of the Christian Bible, records the teachings of Jesus and his earlist followers. |
Gospels | Translated as "Good News".First four books of the New Testment, described the life and teachings of Jesus from 4 different points of view: Mathew, Mark, Luke, John. |
Parables | Stories with a moral,Jesus often used parables to explain important lessons |
Epistles | formal letters written by early leaders in the Christian Church.Paul wrote a numbe r of Epistles that explain Christian beliefs in great detail. |
Trinity | The Christian understandings that God is represented in 3 persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit |
Ethics | issues of right or wrong and how to treat people. |
Golden Rule | a rule of ethical conduct that Jesus taught,"Treat others how you would want to be treated." |
Ascension | the ascent of Christ into heaven on the fortieth day after the Ressurection |
Denomonations | Christians have divided themselves into different branches.Differences come down to church tradition,worship style,and history |
Good Friday | the Friday before Easter Sunday, on which the cruxifiction of Jesus Christ is commemutated.Christians believe Jesus died to pay for sin. |
Easter | Most important festival of Christian Church, the resserection of Jesus. |
Providence | the protective care of God or of nature as a sprititual power |
Messiah | the promised deliverer of the Jewish nation porphesied in the Old Testment.Hebrew word meaning Christ. |
Sermon on the Mount | a speech delivered by Jesus to the deciples and others, and important Christian teachings |
The Great Commision | the instruction from Jesus to the disiples to spread the gospel to all the nations of the world. |
Disciples | a personal follower of Jesus during his life, especially one of the twelve Apostles |
Conversion | The fact changings one's religion or belief system |
Sin | an immoral act considred to be a trangression or violation agiainst God's law |
Reprentance | the action of repenting; sincere regret or remorse. Each person who turns to God and Jesus in genuin repentanst and faith will be saved. |
