Plate tectonics
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Inner core | The inner core is 1,200 km thick and makes up the very centre of the Earth. |
| Outer core | The outer core is 2200 km thick and surrounds the inner core. |
| Mantle | The mantle is 2900 km thick and is the middle layer of the earth. |
| Endogenic forces | Forces from within the earth that cause the crust to move vertically or horizontally. Convection currents are mainly responsible for endogenic forces. |
| Asthenosphere | 100 - 200 km thick section of the mantle |
| Lithosphere | Solid part of the upper mantle and the crust combined |
| Moho line | The boundary that divides the solid upper mantle and the Earths crust |
| Continental crust | Land |
| Oceanic crust | Oceans and seas |
| Magma | Liquid rock |
| Semi-molten | Half liquid and half solid |
