Sport - Respiratory System - key terms

TermDefinition
Nasal cavity Hairs filter dust, pollen and other particles. Air is warmed and moistened
Pharynx The throat. Connects the nasal cavity to the larynx.
Larynx The voice box. Has rigid walls of cartilage. Connects the pharynx to the trachea.
Trachea The wind pipe. Surrounded by rings of cartilage. Branches into the left & right bronchi.
Epiglottis Small flap of cartilage that allows food to pass into the stomach and not into the lungs
Lungs an organ that allows oxygen to be drawn into the body
Bronchi branch off the trachea and carry air into the lungs
Bronchioles small airways that extend from the bronchi. Connect the bronchi to the alveoli. Approx 1mm in diameter
Alveoli tiny air sacs in the lungs. where gaseous exchange happens
Diaphragm a flat muscle located beneath the lungs. involved in inspiration and expiration
Thoracic cavity the chamber in the chest protected by the ribs & sternum
Internal intercostal muscles muscles inside the ribcage. they draw the ribs downwards & inwards
External intercostal muscles muscles outside the ribcage. they draw the ribs upwards and outwards
