TermDefinition
United Nations- In June 1945, the United States and the Soviet Union temporarily set aside their differences. They joined 48 other countries and formed the United Nations (UN). This international organization was formed to protect the members of aggression.
containment- foreign policy adopted by Truman; this policy was directed at blocking Soviet influence and stopping the expansion of communism.
Cold War- war between the United States and the Soviet Union, a cold war is a struggle over political differences carried on by means short of military action or war
NATO- North Atlantic Treaty Organization, due to Europe’s fears of Soviet aggression, 10 western European nations joined with the United States and Canada to form a defensive military alliance called NATO
Warsaw Pact- seeing NATO as a threat, the Soviet Union formed its own pact
brinkmanship- a policy of threatening to go to war in response to any enemy aggression
Red Guards- mainly teenagers who pledged their devotion to Chairman Mao; they roamed China’s cities and countryside from 1966-1968 causing widespread chaos
Ho Chi Minh- (“he who enlightens”), a young Vietnamese nationalist who turned to the Communists for help in his struggle, although a communist, he declared, “All men are created equal”, he ruled North Vietnam by crushing all opposition
domino theory- the idea that if a nation falls under Communist control, nearby nations will also fall under Communist control
Khmer Rouge- Communist rebels, in 1975, set up a brutal communist government under the leadership of Pol Pot, they slaughtered 2 million people, overthrown by the Vietnamese in 1978
nonaligned nations- the independent countries that remained neutral in the Cold War competition between the U.S. and the Soviet Union
SALT- Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (a series of meetings) between Nixon and Brezhnev
